Final preparations for our trip [Photos] – Leaving this Friday / Saturday for Burning Man 2014!

We had a great work party last weekend with participants coming by the Berkeley CSO on both Saturday and Sunday. Our packing and organization is much better this year. A big THANK YOU of gratitude to all who have helped us get to Burning Man this year.

Grant got to fly above Burning Man!

Grant was given a Burning Sky token in appreciation for giving a foot wash to one of the skydivers. This is the view he saw up in the plane. Pretty cool huh!

Time to get on the road!!!

We really weren’t sure that everything would fit, but it did. We got rolling around 5:30 pm. The drive to Reno was truly wonderful — excellent conversation, playing a round of the Radical Acts game (pretty neat actually) and seeing LOTS of Burners also making the journey. Our hosts here in Reno stayed up to greet us and make us feel right at home. Tomorrow church in Reno, one more short shopping trip and then we depart for Black Rock City, shooting to arrive at sunrise.

We’ve been scrambling to finish last-minute planning, building, preparation and logistics for our trip out the Nevada desert. We leave tomorrow for Reno, where some families from First Church of Christ, Scientist Reno will be hosting us Saturday night. We’re planning on attending church on Sunday, answering questions and doing final shopping & prep, then leaving for the playa early Sunday morning, probably around 4am so we can arrive at sunrise. Yesterday we setup our 30′ Playa Dome for the first time. We selected the Berkeley Marina again, since it’s a nice windy place, and we wanted to see what that would be like. It took 4 of us (Grant, Julian, Drea, and Gabriel) about an hour and a half to get it fully assembled. We broke 4 of the supports (they supply extras thankfully) and we’ll replenish those before we take the dome to Burning Man. One key learning was to use the outer connector pieces for the circular support level instead of inner — the circumference was too tight to get the final piece in. We’ll be at Burning Man in 1 week!!!

Test-run of foot-washing operation at the Summit was a success!

We did a test-run of the foot-washing operation that we’re planning to do at Burning Man at the recent Northern California Church Alive Summit in Sacramento. It was a definite success. One surprising thing was how strongly attracted to this a couple of the children were — they really gravitated towards it, and were fearless about asking people to come and let them wash their feet. Precious!
